Where in the World?

Where in the World?

Using Montessori cosmic curriculum, HMS begins by giving the child a sense of where we are in space and why? The curiosity of the big picture often comes out in the circular questions: why, why, WHY?! In the first plane of development (0-6 years) this is very natural. Children are just starting to realize they are a part of a greater community, world, and universe. To make these ideas concrete, we show the child a model of the Earth (globe) and talk about how it is a big sphere in space. Then by cutting the globe in half and smashing it flat we create a map so we can see the whole Earth at once.

When a child has a sensorial impression of the continents using the puzzle map, hearing and singing the names of the continents and handling the globe, they can "record" what they've learned. In this case, recording is creating a paper version of the map.

The child chooses 7 different colored papers, traces each puzzle piece to their appropriate color, pushpins along the outline of each one to "cut" it out (this in itself is a fine motor work that requires great concentration), then cuts out the names and hemispheres, then references to the map to put each continent and name in the correct place. Whew! Then all of this is pasted to a big white paper with their name.

This is a multi-day project that requires the child to continuously organize and problem solve. It reinforces skills such as: attempting multiple ways of solving problems or correcting errors, managing frustration with flexibility, embracing challenges in work, demonstrating an ability to organize work, and seeking help when needed. These life skills can be strengthened in this work, along with confidence and the feeling of accomplishment in the end.
